Depression is the sluggishness of mind, body and spirit that keeps us from being our best selves. Treatment of Depression can restore hope and pleasure to your daily life.
Depression is Painful

If you said yes to any of these, it might be an indication that you are struggling with depression. Like anxiety, depression can feel different for everyone. It can come on suddenly after a traumatic event or gradually, due to years of challenging experiences or emotional neglect. Sometimes our depression stems from not understanding how to support ourselves emotionally. That's where therapy can help.
Depression can look different for everyone. Here are a few symptoms:
- Low mood
- Feeling sad or generally discontent
- Difficulty concentrating
- Sleep disturbance
- Increased or decreased appetite
- Isolation from loved ones
- Slowness of movements
- Thoughts of suicide or harm to others
Living with these symptoms for extended periods of time can interfere with our wellbeing including physical health, relationships, work life and spirituality. If you have experienced these symptoms for a period of two weeks or longer, it may be valuable to consult with a professional to begin discussing how best to take care of your mental wellbeing. And while periods of sadness are ok (especially following a loss or stressful event), it's not ok to live that way ongoing.

Depression Impacts Us All
According to the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC), depression is the #1 leading cause of disability in the United States for individuals ages 15-44. This has a huge impact on our working lives. In fact, depression ranks next to family illness and stress in terms of issues impacting the workplace. Despite it's impact, depression research is grossly underfunded compared to illness impacting far less Americans per year. Some of the most shocking statistics come from research on suicide. Every 12. 3 minutes, someone in the United States, die by suicide, many of these being Veterans.
Despite these statistics, we know that 80% of people who receive treatment for depression report improvement 4-6 weeks after beginning therapy.
There is hope for people with depression. Recovery is possible.
The Three Major Types of Depression
Depression is a unique experience for all of us. There are different reasons we become depressed including trauma, chronic stress, inability to cope with daily life. That said, there are some major categories our depression can fall into:
Major Depression- Major depression is characterized as being unable to feel pleasure or enjoy things like you used to. The symptoms of major depression are constant and can range from moderate (somewhat interrupt daily living) to severe (unable to function in daily life). Some people may only experience this once in their life. Others have lived with this experience chronically.
Dysthymia- Dysthymia is a chronic milder version of depression compared to Major Depression. Mild to moderate symptoms of depression may be intermittent with some days of feeling normal.
Bipolar Disorder- Bipolar Disorder is an experience of Major Depression or Dysthymia combined with periods of elevated moods called Mania. These mood swings can occur over weeks to months. Patterns of Bipolar Disorder are unique to individuals and can be caused by a number of reasons including diet or trauma. Sometimes the origin of Bipolar Disorder is unknown.
It is important to seek out a clinician familiar with all types of depression. He/She will be able to take a look at your specific needs and tailor treatment to you specifically.

Chronic Stress Can Cause Depression.
At any given time, our bodies can only take so much stress. As city dwellers, we are constantly under a bit more stress than our rural and suburban counterparts. Things like noise pollution, fighting the subway crowd, work stress, dating and relationships as well as an overarching feeling of loneliness can really add up! This list doesn't even begin to take in the unexpected such as change in roommates, illness, breakups or loss of employment.
Our bodies have a limited reserve of energy to address stress throughout the day. Often we are unaware of how much energy we have. This leads to burnout and physical breakdown. Chronic stress leads to elevated hormone levels of cortisol, resulting in things like clinical depression. Because of the stress of city life, we believe it is important for all of our clients to learn stress reduction techniques to alleviate and prevent depression. We work with you to weed out the parts of your life that are taking up to much energy as well as restore your energy reserves through ongoing, sustainable self care practices.
Some things depression might look like in your life:
- Over or under eating
- Over or under exercising
- Increased alcohol consumption
- Isolating from friends and family
- Poor sleep quality
- Constant feelings of anger, resentment and jealousy
- Lack of hope for the future inability to make decisions
- Low self esteem
Depression Doesn't Have to Rule Your Life
Most of us will experience depression at some point in our lives. I have over 15 years experience working with all types of depression. I approach depression as an indicator that something is "too much" and that some form of pressure, either emotional, spiritual or behavioral needs to be addressed. Sessions combine evidence based practices with caring, compassionate experiences for you to heal. Whether the underlying issue is something you are presently experiencing such as job stress, or it happened many years ago when you were a child, therapy can help you learn to feel better and find relief.
In our sessions, we'll explore what you understand to be the cause of your depression. You know your body and mind best. I am here to help you unwind and uncover what's stopping progress or making your depression worse. When you work with a therapist who truly understands the nature and roots of depression, it becomes easier to develop a plan for healing. We will begin by taking a look at everything from obstacles you've overcome to recreational things you enjoy (even if you aren't enjoying much these days). We'll start to understand your unique symptoms and find ways to find relief from day one. Fully healing from depression can take some time, but there's no reason why you can't feel a bit better right away. That's why we try to do 2 things in the first session: get to know you as best we can to develop a long term strategy and find immediate relief using evidence-based short term therapy tools.

I've Heard Therapy Isn't Worth It And Can Be Expensive.
Possibly you have worked with therapists in the past with limited results. I completely get it. Therapy can seem expensive, especially when we aren't sure how much we will get out of it. In our sessions, we value an open discussion about how things are going. We want to know that we are moving in the right direction. Sometimes it's hard to see small progress from week to week. That's why it's helpful to use evidence-based ways of measuring progress in between sessions. We value your time and want you to get results from your therapy experience.
When you find the right therapist, the process can be invaluable. It is an investment in yourself that can change the course of your life. It can provide a foundation for loving yourself and others. Therapy can free you from years of suffering. It can allow you to achieve more than you ever knew you could. With the right person, it can be a deeply transformative experience.

If this isn't possible we offer a sliding scale. If the fee still doesn't work, we have a caring network of therapists throughout Manhattan that take all insurance plans. We will help you find quality care as best we can.
What if I Don't Want to talk About My Past?
No worries! Your therapy sessions are based upon what you feel is relevant during our sessions. You will never be forced or required to share any information you do not feel comfortable with. Therapy is a collaborative process. And we always respect what you feel comfortable discussing.
What If My Depression Gets Worse?
Your health and safety are our top priority. We know that sometimes depression requires a team to get you back on track. That's why we take the time to monitor how you are doing. If we see that your depression is getting worse, we will find other resources to help us help you feel better. When you work with us, you actually get a team of people ready and available to help you feel better as soon as possible.
All our clinicians have training in managing crisis as well as suicide prevention. We understand that sometimes feel out of control. That's ok. We are here to help.
